Driving to Pierre
Between Bear Butte and Pierre
the frozen prairie rolls out
from either side of highway 34
wide emptinesses unsettle us
once again, this land—
its spaces between gray cow-ponds
along the road, nothing moves
until the silver truck stop
rises out of deep-blue evening
sinks again, once we have passed
