GIANTS IN THE EARTH
In late winter the skeletons of trees come up
through the thinning snow
knuckles of stones bared
where the hills have become restless with us.
The hills will shed us
raise granite shoulders above the lakes
fifty-foot pines scattering like
clippings of hair.
All that is living is subject to all that
is dormant.
Expect the awakening in spring.
The hills will trample us and our towns incidentally before
settling back down into new landscapes.
