On Not Being Summed Up
They will ask you to list
your strengths, your goals,
your "areas for growth."
They will chart you, box you,
place you on a scatterplot like a
constellation that never glows
the same twice.
But your best friend—
she never needed metrics to love
the offbeat timing of your laugh,
the crooked way you stir coffee
before saying something true.
No rubric knows you like that.
