The Role
She was 33 when her mother died.
And suddenly, the matriarch.
I don’t think we always know
what we’re losing when we lose
a grandmother.
We lose a center. We lose
the teacher who doesn’t correct us,
only folds us into story.
My mother bore the weight
of that silence. But still,
she told us what she could.
