talking with trees
based on words from Philip Larkin's "Talking In Bed"
talking words into the trees is easiest
when you and I agree that
leaves and bark listen people aren't honest
wanting more and more to hear less outside,
phrases are incomplete until tall pencils
scratch the clouds sky-
high above towns poems rush the horizon
though no one cares but us nothing can match
that moment our distance closes
leaf becomes a greedy ear to catch
the words our true mouths utter
or perhaps an eye but always patient
