last night
planes flew south
from the dark grass
I heard them
stars and then a red
beacon far above
the moon waning two-thirds
intact
over my head and blue
afterburners
cutting open the pasture--
twin blowtorches--
the large black bodies of horses
bolting dogs
whimpering the noise never
left only grew
more distant
